English follows

August 6 — A Day to Pledge Peace

Summer mornings in Hiroshima are hot from the very start. Cicadas fill the air and the sun is relentless. Yet a breeze comes in off the sea, so the heat never quite closes in.

Every year on August 6, at 8:15 in the morning, I observe a moment of silence. The habit has not changed since I left Hiroshima.

I am hibakusha sansei — a third-generation descendant of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. My grandmother and my aunt both died of causes traced back to that day. I have no memories of them. What I have instead is the fact of their absence — a blank space where they should have been.

Had that morning eighty-one years ago not happened, my family would have taken a different form. I might have grown up looking at an entirely different view.

There is one thing I listen for every year. At the Peace Memorial Ceremony, two schoolchildren from Hiroshima read aloud a "Commitment to Peace" that they have written themselves. This year's contained the following passage:

"Peace is not something given to us by someone else; it is something all the people of the world create together." (The full text is published by the City of Hiroshima → https://www.city.hiroshima.lg.jp/education/kyouiku-suishin/1026024/1008989.html)

Twelve-year-olds put that into their own words.
The question is what those of us who are adults do with it.

"Peace" is a word large enough to feel remote from ordinary daily life. But its entrance is much closer than we assume.

Imagine what the other person is feeling. When you disagree, receive it before you reject it. Those were the actions the children named.

They are difficult things to do with a crowded mind. When we are rushed, imagination is the first thing to go. No room is left to consider where the person in front of us is coming from.

This is why stopping — even briefly — matters.

A few minutes in a day. Sitting still, letting the breath settle. When the noise in your head recedes a little, you can begin to think about someone other than yourself. Those small margins accumulate. They sustain imagination, and imagination changes behaviour.

World Peace is the mission of my life. Not as a distant ideal, but as something that begins the moment each of us recovers a measure of quiet inside.

August 6. At 8:15, I made my pledge for peace as I do every year.
